The result of responding to an adult's joint attention bid is a brief social interaction about, and continued shared attention to, the object of joint attention.
A number of studies have demonstrated consistent deficits in both responding to and initiating joint attention bids in preschool children with autism.
Studies indicate that the impairment in joint attention changes over the course of development: Whereas skills in initiating joint attention remain impaired, some children with autism who show more advanced cognitive development begin to demonstrate the ability to respond to others' joint attention bids.
Given the differential development of responding to and initiating joint attention bids, it may be that the two skills involve somewhat different functions and that only initiating joint attention requires true social motivation.
When a child responds to another person's joint attention bid, he or she may have learned that "looking where someone else is looking" is likely to be reinforced by the presence of interesting objects and events.
